Athletics Canada is proud to unveil today the Nike track and field kit that will be worn at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio and through the next quadrennial. The red, white and black colour way, combined with Nike AeroSwift technology, ensures Canadian athletes stand out and have every advantage in Rio de Janeiro.
About the kit
- Engineered at the fiament level, AeroSwift is light, strong, dry, stretchy, and breathable without being transparent or unsupportive
- Evolving the aerodynamic technology created in 2012, 2016 uniforms feature strategically placed AeroBlades: vortex generators that help air flow around the runner and offer the greatest aerodynamic drag reduction yet
- Kits are 17% lighter, dry 32% faster, and have 50% more stretch than previous
- The Canadian kit was finished by taking inspiration from our flag and features an explosion of patriotic tones and vibrant colours
The Canadian AeroSwift track and field kits are developed to create a head-to-toe system of performance that allows elite athletes to perform at their very best with zero distractions. The foundation of the uniforms is AeroSwift yarn, which is 17 percent lighter, 50 percent stretchier, and dries 32 percent faster than previously utilized materials. This strong, sustainable yarn creates uniform pieces that act as an extension of the body and promote flow motion design: a principle that allows athletes to engage in a full range of motions without adding complications, weight, or distractions. This year’s kits also debut innovative AeroBlade technology, tiny strategically-placed silicone vortex generators that act to move air out and around the runner’s body during forward movement.
Canadian athletics is riding a huge wave of momentum following best-ever medal hauls at the 2013 IAAF World Championships (5 medals), 2015 IAAF World Championships (8 medals) and the squad counts four reigning World Champions: Shawn Barber – pole vault, Derek Drouin – high jump, Brent Lakatos – T53 wheelchair 100m/200m/800m, Guillaume Ouellet - T13 5000m.
Made from innovative, lightweight Nike AeroSwift technology featuring recycled polyester, the kits reduce and simplify construction in an effort to minimize weight. This performance hybrid is made possible by an advanced manufacturing process that pairs a four-way stretch knit with breathable, engineered mesh that also integrates Nike AeroBlades.
Engineered into the apparel in strategic areas — identified via hundreds of hours of wind tunnel testing — Nike AeroBlades disrupt and improve the air around the athlete, resulting in the greatest drag reduction of any Nike track & field kit to date. And unlike past aerodynamic technology, which was specifically designed for sprints, Nike AeroBlades assist all runners.
