Athletics Canada to field team at 2017 World Para Athletics Junior Championships

Ottawa – Athletics Canada announced today that Canada will field a team at the 2017 World Para Athletics Junior Championships that will take place in the Swiss town of Nottwill from Aug. 3-6. The 2017 event will be staged at Sport Arena, the same venue that hosted the IPC Athletics Grand Prix.

“Athletics Canada is pleased to provide its young para-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a world-class international event,” said Chief Executive Officer Rob Guy. “The 2017 World Para Athletics Junior Championships will serve as a stepping stone between junior and senior competitions for our top athletes, and give them a taste of what’s ahead in their international athletics careers.”

IPC Athletics, the global governing body of para-athletics, created the new event to provide the first step in the development pathway for young international class athletes towards regional and World Championships, as well as the Paralympic Games.

Athletics Canada will select up to 10 para-athletes in the junior age category (18-19 years of age) to participate in the Championships on June 12. The selection criteria will be available in early May. The qualification period is Jan. 1 to June 11, 2017, for this event.
