Team Canada World Indoor Championships Hub

OTTAWA – Today Athletics Canada named fourteen athletes that will wear the maple leaf at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, March 17 to 20. The team features 2015 World pole vault Champion Shawn Barber, 2015 World Championships silver medallist Brianne Theisen-Eaton, and 2014 World Indoor bronze medallist Nicole Sifuentes.

“The World Indoor Championships in Portland represent the last major international competition before the 2016 Olympic Games,” said Peter Eriksson, Head Coach. “The four-day competition will see some of our best athletes go up against some of the worlds best providing a preview of what’s to come in Rio. The team objective, and as such athlete selections to the team, was made based on potential to reach finals and medal in Portland.”   

Canadians will be able to follow the competition with CBC Sports’ exclusive live online streaming coverage at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, as well as additional coverage as part of CBC Sports’ Road To The Olympic Games TV broadcasts. Shawn Barber has continued right where he left off following a 2015 dream campaign and enters the World Indoor Championships ranked second in the world behind France’s Renaud Lavillenie. In January Barber cleared 6.00-metres to set a new Canadian all-time best.

Brianne Theisen-Eaton looks to improve on the silver medal she won at the last World Indoor Championships in 2014 (Sopot, Poland). Her 2015 season included medals at the Pan Am Games and World Outdoor Championships as well as a new Canadian record in the heptathlon. 

Nicole Sifuentes of Winnipeg, Man., won bronze in the 1500-metres at the 2014 World Indoor Championships and won silver in the same event at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto. 

Other Canadians who could make a mark in Portland include Mohammed Ahmed, Cam Levins and Tim Nedow. Ahmed is fresh off a Canadian record performance in the 3000-metres. Cam Levins set a new Canadian all-time best last season in the 10,000-metres, and Tim Nedow is flirting with Dylan Armstrong’s indoor shot put record (21.39m) with a seasonal best of 21.33-metres. Nedow was also crowned shot put champion in the IAAF’s inaugural World Indoor Tour this season.
