Trujillo, Peru – In 2013, Alysha Newman, Sage Watson, Shawn Barber, Brandon McBride, Georgia Ellenwood, Jenna Westaway and Andre DeGrasse helped set a medal count record for Canada. This year’s team appears ready to challenge that seventeen medal total.

Winning six medals was a big confidence boost on Day 1 and the momentum appears have carried over. Gabby Rains of Sherwood Park, Alberta got things started on Day 2 in the discus with a throw of 53.06m. Her throw earned a bronze medal and medals started coming early and often.

The medal haul saw athletes across a variety of event groups contribute to the effort. Ashlan Best of Guelph, Ont., took home the gold medal in the 200m in a time of 23.27. Jean-Simon Desgagnés of Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges, Que., won gold in the men’s 3000 metre steeplechase (8:56.47), Laura Dickinson of  Miramichi, N.B., claimed gold in the women’s 5000m metres (16.39.50) and Victoria Tachinski of Winnipeg, Man., was victorious in the women’s 800 metres (2:04.22).

Silver medals went to Jazz Shukla of Toronto in the women’s 800 metres, Marco Arop of Edmonton in the men’s 800 metres.
