Wet conditions couldn’t dampen the spirits of the athletes or the capacity crowd at Terry Fox Stadium in Ottawa on Friday night. Three-time Olympic medal winner, Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont., successfully defended his title as the fastest man in Canada winning the men’s 100-metre final in 10.11. Following De Grasse across the line were runner-up Brendon Rodney of Brampton, Ont., in a personal best 10.18 and Gavin Smellie of Etobicoke, Ont., in bronze medal position with a time of 10.23.

In the women’s competition, Crystal Emmanuel proved once again to be Canada’s fastest woman with a winning time of 11.20 seconds. Emmanuel’s win and time secured a spot on the Canadian roster at next month’s IAAF World Championships. University student-athlete Leya Buchanan of Mississauga, Ont., took home silver with Flings Owusu-Agyapong rounding out the podium.

In the women’s javelin finals, Liz Gleadle of Vancouver broke the championship meet record. Her fourth round throw of 60.62m eclipsed the mark previously set at 2012 Olympic Trials by almost half a metre.

Olympic bronze medallist in the decathlon, Damian Warner of London, Ont., won the men’s long jump with best effort of 7.53m. Canadian record holder Christabel Nettey of Surrey, B.C., won the women’s long jump with a distance of 6.23m on her only attempt. A pair of university athletes, Jordan Young of Windsor, Ont., and Agnes Esser of McBride, B.C., picked up titles in the men’s and women’s discus competitions.
