HOSTS FOR HERSHEY’S TRACK & FIELD GAMES DAY IN CANADA & WORLD ATHLETICS DAY ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA - Athletics Canada announced
today the three communities which will host HERSHEY’S Track & Field Games™
Day in Canada events during the upcoming month of May. Grande Prairie,
Alta., Surrey, B.C., and Saskatoon,
Sask., will all host competitions
as part of this national celebration of grassroots athletics. The participating competitions were chosen
from nationwide applications.
The
selected competitions are targeted to midget aged participants and younger and
are hosted as part of a school or community club event. Each competition will be provided with an
event kit and will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $1,000 grant
to be used to support grassroots athletics in their community.

Athletics Manitoba Spring Open to
host World Athletics Day
Athletics
Canada also announced today
that the Athletics Manitoba Spring Open in Winnipeg, Man.,
will play host to the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF)
World Athletics Day on May 11 and 12, 2012.
The event takes place at the University
of Manitoba Stadium, site
of the 2011 and 2012 Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships.
The
Athletics Manitoba Spring Open will receive a grant from the IAAF to assist in
the organization and operation of the competition, promotional materials will
also be made available to enhance awareness around World Athletics Day 2012.

Hershey’s Track & Field Games was founded in 1975 by
Dr. Donald P. Cohen in Charleston,
W.Va. It has grown from a
local playground event in a single community to an international program
encouraging youth physical activity and sportsmanship. This marks the 37th
birthday season of the Games, with more than 10 million children from the United
States and Canada having participated in the past three decades. Children
interested in participating in the Games or adults interested in

Now in
its 17th year, World Athletics Day is an initiative to promote athletics to
youth worldwide. Last year’s edition
featured participation from 140 countries.
This year youth athletes (born 1995 and 1996) and school based aged
