Dupont, Lakatos and Whitehouse golden on day 4 of athletics at the Parapan Am Games

Alexandre Dupont of Clarenceville, Que., Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que., and Kyle Whitehouse of St. Catherines, Ont., delivered golden performances on day four of athletics competition at the 2015 Parapan Am Games. Lana Dupont of Saskatoon, Sask., Alexandre’s wife, delivered silver and bronze medal performances, while Josh Cassidy of Port Elgin, On., and Jessica Rotten of Whitehorse, Yukon chipped in with silver and bronze respectively.

Brent Lakatos opened up day four of athletics competition at the Parapan Am Games with a win in the T53 wheelchair 800-metres. Lakatos placed first in the event on Wednesday night as well, however race officials had ordered a re-run as a few competitors were knocked out of their racing chairs after a nasty collision in the original race. Lakatos led start to finish in the re-run to take the gold in a Parapan Am Games record time of 1:43.90.

Kyle Whitehouse won gold in a Parapan Am Games record time of 23.66 in the men’s T38 200-metres final. Whitehouse was very emotional after the win, stating that his mother that passed away two-years ago was very much on his mind.

Alex Dupont twice won the final of the T54 wheelchair 800-metres. In the first race Dupont sailed to victory while Josh Cassidy finished third to take the bronze. An impressive crash with 200-metres to go took out five of the eight competitors and race officials ordered a re-run at the end of the session. Dupont repeated his feat, finishing first in 1:40.67 while Cassidy moved into the silver medal position the second time around just behind Dupont in 1:41.18.

In the women’s T53 wheelchair 800-metres Ilana Dupont won bronze in 2:08.67. Teammate Jessica Frotten finished just behind Dupont in fourth place 2:09.59. Michelle Stilwell of Nanoose Bay, B.C., a competitor in the T52 category, was eight in the final in 2:22.90.

Ilana Dupont and Jessica Frotten were also in the medal mix in the women’s T53 wheelchair 100-metres. Dupont won silver in 18.63 seconds with Frotten earning bronze in 19.25.

Vanessa Murby of Salt Spring Island, B.C., placed eight in the F11/F12 shot put final with a best throw of 7.90-metres.

Cody Salomons of Strathroy, Ont., finished sixth in the T42/T44/t47 men’s high jump final with a personal best of 1.91-metres.

Kevin Strybosch of London, Ont., was fourth in the F37 shot put final with a seasonal best toss of 10.75-metres.
