Dupont and Strybosch compete on Day 1 of Paralympic Games athletics competition

Athletics competition begins tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro at the 2016 Paralympic Games.

At the 2012 Paralympic Games, Athletics Canada won nine medals, led by Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que., with three. The lone gold medallist at the London Games was Michelle Stilwell of Parksville, B.C., she and Lakatos will be in action at the Rio Games.

In the morning session Ilana Dupont of Saskatoon, Sask., races in the T53 classification wheelchair 100-metres with an eye on qualifying for the final taking place in the evening session.

Also in the evening session, Kevin Strybosch of London, Ont., takes to the circle in the F37 classification discus final.

Day two of athletics competition will be busier for the Canadian team with Brent Lakatos and Jean-Philippe Maranda of Sherbrooke, Que., in the heats of the T53 wheelchair 100-metres. Alister McQueen of Calgary, Alta., throws in the F44 javelin final and Ness Murby of Salt Spring Island, B.C., throws in the F11 (visually impaired) discus final.

If Lakatos and Maranda advance out of the heats, they will race in the 100-metre final in the evening.
