Gordon Orlikow to step down as Chair

Gordon Orlikow, Chair of Athletics Canada’s Board of Directors, will retire as Chair of the Board following the upcoming Annual General Meeting on July 8. This decision is consistent with the Board’s succession plan.

“Serving as Board Chair and working with such a talented team of colleagues in the sport community has been one of the greatest privileges in my career,” said Orlikow. He adds, “The world needs more Canada, and I am proud to have played my part in delivering on the promise of our national brand.”

Canada’s performance and influence in the global athletics community has never been stronger. Orlikow led Athletics Canada through a period of extensive change to deliver its best results in the modern era. Through the same period, on the domestic front, Athletics Canada has doubled its investment in supporting athletes, coaches and officials, forged new partnerships with the masters and road-running communities and delivered award-winning domestic competitions and events. Orlikow’s vision, persistence, collaborative style and good humour have served athletics in Canada very well.

Orlikow has served on the Athletics Canada Board since 2006, and has held the role of Board Chair since 2009. His volunteer activities with the national federation stretches back to 1999. Orlikow’s commitment to athletics has been steadfast bringing his professional experience as well as that of an experienced volunteer, coach, official and athlete.

As out-going Chair, Orlikow will maintain a strong connection with Athletics Canada to ensure a smooth transition to the new chair, which will include leading our delegation at the 2017 IAAF World Championships & Congress in London this August.

Bill MacMackin will move from Vice-Chair to Chair at the 2017 Annual General Meeting. MacMackin is the past Chair of Athletics New Brunswick, and has served Athletics Canada in committee roles and as a Board Member for the last three years.

MacMackin brings years of volunteer experience in athletics as an athlete, event director, coach, club president and provincial branch chair. In his professional career, MacMackin is co-founder in a funeral services business that operates in Ontario and Atlantic Canada. This past year MacMackin was named 2017 Volunteer of the Year by the Canadian Sports Tourism Alliance for his work in sports event development in New Brunswick. He is also leading the new $25 million field house in Saint John, N.B., which will provide a new national calibre track and field venue in Atlantic Canada that is expected to open in 2019.

Orlikow’s handoff to MacMackin will ensure Athletics Canada is well positioned to continue the momentum in delivering the organizations strategic plan through the next quadrennial.
