AC: How has your training been going this past fall and now winter?

KBB: My training is going very well! I just come back from a 2 week training camp in Austin with my training group and I am very satisfied with the training we did. Austin has the perfect weather to train (not too cold and not too hot). With trails beside the river, the 400m track and the panoramic city in the background, it’s a great training setup. Austin was a very cool city for food and the lifestyle. We enjoyed going to get groceries at Whole Foods market as well as eating tacos at the food trucks.

AC: You recently moved to Guelph to train with the Speed River Track Club under Dave Scott-Thomas. Can you please talk a bit about that decision and how the transition is going?

KBB: I think my decision happened at the right time in my career. It is less than two years until Rio now. After my 2014 season, I was looking for a place to train that would help me to reach my goals. So I decided last fall to come visit Guelph and meet coach Dave. After training with the group for a few days I knew that I had joined a very good organization. The difference this year is that I’ve been training harder and I feel that my body is ready for it.

AC: How would you rate your 2014 season? And what, if any, lessons did you learn last year that will help you in the future?

KBB: 2014 was a big year for me in my personal life. I had to move twice during the season and I was not able to focus enough on my races. Despite the stress of moving, I am very satisfied with how I performed.

I hit the standard for the Commonwealth Games (under 2:01.50) just after my second race of the season. I was hoping for a personal best at the Occidental meet, but unfortunately in the last 100m I put my foot on the rail and almost fell.

I didn’t race until the Canadian Championships because I was moving. Finishing second was a very nice surprise, because I wasn’t very confident going in. The Commonwealth Game were another great experience. To be honest, I was very disappointed with my race. I had a great tactical race but when I hit the last 150m I wasn’t prepared enough to stay relaxed in the 'lactic effect’. A couple of races before the Commonwealth Games might have helped.

For 2015, I feel that I am more organized in my training, focused and confident. I have great support from Speed River, awesome training partners and also very good sponsors with Mediagrif, LesPac, Norton Rose, Asics and Presto Lunch!

AC: What role does the indoor season play as you prepare for a year that features the Pan Am Games and World Championships?

KBB: During the indoor season, I focus more on my training. I like to do some indoor races because they will help me stay mentally sharp.

AC: What specific elements of your race or fitness are you focusing on this winter and this year?

KBB: With my new coach Dave I am running much more mileage, but I am still doing a lot of speed workouts. Because I train more than before, I am focusing on the recovery time by doing more stretches, sleeping better, eating well and having good massage therapy.

AC: With the championships being in Montreal what are looking forward to most? What do you miss most about Montreal now that you train Guelph?

KBB: I can’t wait to see my family and friends. I look forward to going on Mont Royal Avenue for a coffee as well.

AC: What are your goals for 2015?

KBB: My goals for 2015 are to win nationals, win at the Pan Am Games and make the final at Worlds.
