Michelle Stilwell wins gold; Mitchell Chase finishes 4th

Day three at the Paralympic Games saw another gold medal for the Canadian athletics team, a fourth place finish by Mitchell Chase of Pickering, Ont., and Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que., advanced to the T53 wheelchair 400-metres final.

Michelle Stilwell of Parksville, B.C., won gold in the T52 wheelchair 400-metres in a Paralympic Games record time of 1:05.42. The previous Paralympic record in this event was also held by a Canadian, Lisa Franks held the record with a time of 1:09.52 from the 2004 Athens Games. The title is Stilwell’s fourth at the Paralympic Games in athletics, and fifth overall having also won gold with the women’s basketball team in 2000.

Stilwell is a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British-Columbia for Parksville-Qualicum, "It was amazing to start so strong. The race was fluid. I felt confident and relaxed through the whole race, to cross the line first and bring the gold home for Canada, it was the moment I was working for."

Mitchell Chase had a solid race to finish fourth in the T38 1500-metres in a seasonal best time of 4:28.44, “I feel great, I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get on the podium but I came fourth, that’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Brent Lakatos advanced to tomorrow T53 wheelchair 400-metres final winning heat one in a time of 50.47 seconds, “I was happy to be in the first heat, I knew it was one of the weaker heats, I was able to take it out really strong, open a lead and relax the second half of the race. Now it’s time to get ready for tomorrow.”

Jean-Philippe Maranda of Sherbrooke, Que., was fourth in heat two of the T53 wheelchair 400-metres in 52.24 seconds. He just misses advancing to the final, finishing ninth overall, “I felt good coming into the race, overall I thought the race went well, my speed was average but I was able to hold it for the entire race.”

Ilana Dupont of Saskatoon, Sask., placed fifth in heat one of the women’s T53 wheelchair 400-metres in a time of 1:00.03, she did not qualify for the final.
