Seccafien, Levins secure 2017 Canadian 5k Road Race titles

The 2017 Canadian 5k Road Race Championships were held today in Toronto. Taking place in conjunction with the B&O Yorkville Run, a number of Canada’s best distance runners took part in the race.

The women’s race featured 2017 IAAF World Championships competitors, Andrea Seccafien of Toronto and Jessica O’Connell of Calgary. The two Olympians went head-to-head over the distance and were in lockstep over the closing few hundred metres. Seccafien, the 2016 champion and 2017 outdoor 5000m Canadian champion, held off O’Connell’s challenge to defend her title. Seperated by a mere .6 seconds, Seccafien was clocked in 15:51.1 and O’Connell in 15:51.7. Sasha Gollish rounded out the podium finishing in 16:15.8.

In the men’s race, Olympian Cam Levins headlined the list of competitors. Content to stay in the pack for a large portion of the race, Levins opened his winning gap over the closing stages of the race to secure his national title. Levins broke the tape in 14:20.2 and was followed across the line by 2017 Canadian 10,000m champion Evan Esselink in second and Kyle Grieve in third.
