Smeenk and Papaconstantinou each finish sixth; Lakatos looking for his second medal on Day 5 of the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships

A pair of Canada’s youngest team members Austin Smeenk of Oakville, Ont., & Marissa Papaconstantinou of Toronto each placed sixth in their event finals on Monday evening. Smeenk competing in the men’s T34 400-metre final competed the lap in 54.56 to grab the sixth spot. Papaconstantinou crossed the line in 13.54 in the women’s T44 100-metre final.

Diane Roy of Lac-des-Aigles, Que., took part in the women’s T54 400-metre final, while Thomas Des Brisay of Kanata, Ont., raced in the men’s T20 1500-metres. Roy crossed the line in 58.87 for an eighth place finish and De Brisay placed 12th in his event final.

Kyle Whitehouse of St. Catherines, Ont., ran a season’s best in the the 200-metres heats and that 23.97 finish was good enough to qualify him for Tuesday’s final. Alex Dupont of Clarenceville, Que., placed 7th and Tristan Smyth of Maple Ridge, B.C., 8th in the heats of the men’s T54 800-metres and did not advance to the final.

Tuesday Preview

Finals start early on Tuesday with Ness Murby of Salt Spring Island, B.C., competing the women's F11 discus final. Murby is currently ranked #3 in the world with a best throw of 23.23m. Later in the evening, Murby will be up for the final in the T11 javelin.

Jason Dunkerley of Hamilton, Ont., and his new guide runner, Jérémie Venne will take the track in the heats of the T11 men’s 1500-metres. Dunkerley, a 5-time Paralympic medallist, is looking for another podium finish.

Brent Lakatos, Isaiah Christophe, Curtis Thom, Illana Dupont and Jessica Frotten will all be back on the track lining up for preliminary rounds of the 200 and 400-metres. Lakatos, who won the T53 200-meters on Sunday, hopes to bring home another medal for Canada. Diane Roy will also compete in the heats of the women’s T54 800-metres.

Rounding out the day of finals action will be 2016 Paralympic silver medallist in the F44 javelin, Alister McQueen. McQueen is currently ranked #3 in the world with vest throw in 2017 of 48.74m.
