Vancouver, BC, Canada – This August, Vancouver will be hosting the first-ever Americas Masters Games. Athletics (Track & Field, Road Running, and Race Walking) will be offered as one of twenty-five official sports, with Athletics being open to athletes ages 35 and up. The Americas Masters Games are about promoting an active and healthy lifestyle by encouraging any and all Masters-aged participants to continue to strive towards sporting success while having fun in the process. This inaugural version of the Americas Masters Games will take place from August 26 – September 4, 2016.
The Games offer an exciting range of competitive opportunities and age categories in each of the 25 sport disciplines that range from Archery to Volleyball. People learning a sport or competing for the first time will find a recreational level of competition, while ex-Olympians and high performance athletes can test themselves against the best in their age category. Events are free to the public to watch.
Athletics events offered include women’s and men’s 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5,000m, 10K, Half Marathon, Short Hurdles, Long Hurdles, Steeplechase, Pole Vault, Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus, Hammer Throw, Javelin, 5,000m Race Walk, 10K Race Walk, and Weight Pentathlon. A women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon will also be offered. Age categories will be determined by age as of August 26th, 2016 and are as follows: 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99, 100+.
The Athletics competition will be hosted at the University of British Columbia’s Rashpal Dhillon Track & Field oval, with the half marathon and 10K routes to be confirmed shortly.
