Women’s 4x100m & 4x400m qualify for 2016 Olympic Games

Athletics Canada’s weekend at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas was highlighted with a fourth place finish and a pair of Canadian records in the women’s 4x100-metres relay. With a top eight finish the women’s 4x100-metres relay team has qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Joining the women’s 4x100-metres in Rio will be the women’s 4x400-metres squad, they qualified for the Olympic Games with a sixth place finish.

The quartet of Crystal Emmanuel of Scarborough, Ont., Kimberly Hyacinthe of Lachenaie, Que., Shai-Anne Davis of Toronto, Ont., and Khamica Bingham of Caledon, Ont., finished fourth and broke the Canadian record in both rounds of competition. In the preliminary heats the squad finished with a time of 42.94 seconds, improving the Canadian record they set of 42.99 at the 2013 World Championships. The women once again lowered the record in the final, this time clocking in at 42.85, finishing a mere .01 seconds out of a medal position,  securing a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The women’s 4x400-metres team of Nicole Sassine of Windsor, Ont., Fawn Dorr of Marten River, Ont., Carline Muir of Edmonton, Alta., and Audrey Jean-Baptiste of Montreal, Que., ran strong in the qualifying round to qualify for the final where they placed sixth in a time of 3:29.65. The top eight finish for the women's 4x400-metres also secured a spot at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The women’s 4x800-metres team was in medal contention throughout the race and crossed the finish line in sixth place. The squad of Karine Belleau-Béliveau of Montreal, Que., Rachel Francois of Victoria, B.C., Elizabeth Whelan of Toronto, Ont., and Rachel Aubrey of Ottawa, Ont., finished in a time of 8:16.27.

The men’s 4x400-metres team of Philip Osei of Toronto, Ont., Michael Robertson of Williamstown, Ont., Daniel Harper of Brampton, Ont., and Tremaine Harris of Markham, Ont., finished seventh in their heat with a time of 3:07.80, they did not advance to the final.

Baton exchange miscues sunk any medal aspirations of the men’s 4x100-metres & 4x200-metres with neither advancing to their event final. All is not lost, the men’s 4x100-metres relay will have more opportunities to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, including later this summer at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China. At the last edition of the IAAF World Championships (2013) the men’s 4x100-metres won bronze.

The 2015 IAAF World Relays featured a total prize purse of USD $1.4 million and served as a qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games in relay events. The overall team competition was won by the USA. On their way to claiming the golden baton, they set world records in the men’s and women’s distance medley relays.
