Athletics Canada makes full vaccination mandatory for all activities

Athletics Canada announced today that everyone over the age of 12 who is attending or participating in Athletics Canada events or activities must be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. This new mandate applies to all athletes, coaches, fans, volunteers, media and event staff and contractors on site for an Athletics Canada event or activity.

The new vaccination policy takes immediate effect and applies to sport events and in-person meetings alike, to ensure a safe environment for everyone.

In the short term, this mandate will apply to anyone attending the 2021 Canadian 10K Championships as part of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon October 17, as well as the 2021 Canadian Cross Country Championships in Ottawa November 27.

"Since we began organizing events in 1986, we promised our community 'an accurate and safe course.' This has been a core value for more than 4 decades. As we look forward to a return to in-person racing this fall, the health and safety of our participants, staff, and volunteers remains of utmost importance,” said Alan Brookes, Race Director, Canada Running Series. “We share Athletics Canada's commitment to require full vaccination for participants, staff and volunteers as the best way forward to restart in-person road racing. We’re excited to get back to what we love and see thousands of people cross that finish line on October 17th!"

“It is our responsibility to provide a safe environment to the people at the heart of our sport. Whether you are an athlete or a coach in the heat of competition, a fan cheering them on, a member of the media sharing stories with the public, a volunteer making the event run smoothly, or an administrator in a meeting, you deserve the peace of mind that all precautions have been taken to ensure your health and safety,” said Athletics Canada CEO David Bedford. “Being fully vaccinated is the most important thing an individual can do to protect themselves and the people around them.“

“Athletics Canada is taking the next step to protect the health and safety of all who take part in our events. From our experience successfully and safely hosting our Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials, we have a proven collection of safety protocols, and this vaccination mandate is the most important addition we can make to those protocols to keep our people safe,” said Athletics Canada Board Chair Helen Manning.

Further details will be shared on the implementation of the policy and the administration of legitimate medical exemptions and event protocols.
