Canada to field team of 17 at world mountain & Trail Running Championships this weekend

A team of six women and 11 men are set to represent Canada at the first ever World Mountain & Trail Running Championships this weekend, from Nov 3 to 6 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Team Canada will field athletes in the women’s and men’s categories in all four of the championship's senior-level events: the 80km and 40km trail races, the classic up and down and the uphill only mountain race. Several athletes, like 2021 Athletics Canada Off-Track Athlete of the Year nominee Alexandre Ricard, and 2022 Canadian vertical climb champion Sasha Gollish, will compete in multiple events over the course of the four-day championship.

Athletes are preparing for a sweltering forecast: temperatures in Chiang Mai are predicted to reach 30 degrees celsius on each day of competition. The course, laid on one of the most mountainous parts of Thailand, also presents a challenge: the uphill-only course spans nearly nine kilometres, and the 80km trail race comprises more than 5,000m of elevation.

The top three runners in all races will receive official World Championships medals, and winners will receive trophies. In addition, a total of $66,000 USD in prize money will be distributed among the top finishers of the four Senior World Championship races.
