Gabriela DeBues-Stafford didn’t miss a beat at the 113th Millrose Games in New York City on Saturday. In a historic women’s indoor mile race, the Toronto-native took down two Canadian indoor records in the mile and 1500-metres (en-route).

With her time of 4:19.73, DeBues-Stafford was able to shave almost five seconds off her own Canadian record (4:24.73) that she set last year in Boston. Her 1500-metre en-route time of 4:00.80 also smashed Nicole Sifuentes’ 2014 record time of 4:07.61. This comes one week after DeBues-Stafford’s sister, Lucia Stafford, bettered her U23 1500-metre record in Boston.

Julie-Anne Staehli continues her strong start to the season, claiming second place in the women’s 3000-metres with a time of 8:49.01. Coming in quickly behind was Regan Yee, who set a new personal-best 8:57.84.

On the men’s side, Justyn Knight has made the Armory Track his own, as he picks up his second straight win at the historic facility, winning the men’s 3000-metre race with a time of 7:46.36.

Kicking things off at the Millrose Games was the men’s mile racewallk, with an appearance from 2016 Olympian Ben Thorne, who made his first competition appearance since 2018. The Kitimat, BC., native finished in fourth place with a time of 6:22.41.

Georgia Ellenwood meanwhile put up her fastest 60-metre hurdles race of her career, clocking across the finish line in 8.47 seconds.

Brittany Crew kept things rolling along in the shot put circle as she continues to push the indoor record closer to her own outdoor personal-best. After throwing a record-breaking 18.30 metres last week, Crew went even bigger, with a winning throw of 18.81 metres at the Athletics Ontario Championships.

Tim Nedow officially got his season underway at the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, where he threw 20.90 metres in the men’s shot put for a quick win to start his Tokyo 2020 pursuit.

Over in Melbourne, Australia, Evan Dunfee competed in his first 20-kilometre race of the season. His time of 39:50.5 was good for second place at the Australian Race Walk Championships.

Lindsey Butterworth competed in North Carolina, where she finished in second place in the women’s 800-metre competition, clocking 2:03.25.

Closing out the week, Alysha Newman competed in Paris at the Perche Elite Tour de Rouen, clearing 4.44 metres to finish in fourth place.

We are gearing up for a big U Sports Championship season, with last chance meets coming up next. Top university athletes are set to peak with big performances in Ottawa, Toronto, Guelph, and Edmonton.
