Montreal Grand Prix to feature pair of pursuit events

Athletics Canada’s Montreal Athletics Grand Prix, taking place the evening of Saturday February 18 in conjunction with the 2017 Hershey Canadian Youth / Junior Indoor Championships, will feature a pair of pursuit style events.

The men will race a 1200-metres pursuit (6-laps) with money on the line for the race leader of each lap. The women will race a mile, with money on the line for the race leader in laps three through eight.

“An indoor event is a great opportunity to try something a little different to entertain spectators and put on a great show. Athletes also enjoy these types of events as they ramp up their training going into the outdoor season,” said Mathieu Gentès, Director of Public Relations and Corporate Services with Athletics Canada. “Working with Kris Mychasiw and the Sprint Management team, we’re confident that we will have world-class fields, and really put on a show in Montreal.”

Gentès adds, “This is a great opportunity for youth and junior athletes to compete in a first-class national championship on February 18 and 19, and on the evening of the 18 rub shoulders with some of the best athletes in the world, and take in an international meet.”

Quebec’s own Charles Philibert-Thiboutot is already confirmed in the men’s 1200-metres pursuit.

Olympic pole vaulter Alysha Newman of London, Ont., has also been announced as part of the women’s pole vault field.

Olympians and world medallists from around the world will continue to be announced over the coming weeks as the fields take shape for the Montreal Athletics Grand Prix.
