Athletics Canada remembers Angela Bailey

The Board of Directors, executive team and staff of Athletics Canada offers its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Angela Bailey, who passed away on July 31 under complicated conditions as she was battling cancer.

“I was very sorry to hear of Angela’s passing. I remember her as a talented and determined athlete. The Athletics Canada family sends their thoughts and sympathy to her family at this sad time,” said Athletics Canada Board Chair Helen Manning.

Bailey enjoyed a distinguished career as a sprinter, representing Canada with pride at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, as well as at the World Championships and other international meets.

She was selected in 1980 to attend her first Olympic Games but was unable to attend due to the boycott of the Games. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Bailey teamed with Marita Payne, Angella Taylor-Issajenko and France Gareau to win a silver medal in the women’s 4×100-metre relay. She would also represent Canada at the Olympic Games in 1988.

Her teammates from that Olympic medal winning relay team said: “We are in shock and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our teammate, Angela Bailey. Our deepest condolences go out to Angela’s family and closest friends. She was a tremendous competitor on the track and we will always cherish the memories we made together. Rest peacefully our friend.”

Bailey also won three silver medals from the 1978, 1982 and 1986 Commonwealth Games in the 4×100 metre relay. At the 1987 World Indoor Championships, she was able to capture a bronze in the 60 metres, and later that year, Angela set the Canadian record in the 100 metres with a time of 10.98 seconds – a record that still stands to this day. She also holds the Canadian indoor record for the women’s 200 metres.

Away from the track, Bailey earned a law degree from Queen’s University in 1996, she completed her bar admission course and was called to the Bar of Ontario in September 2003. She was inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Athletics Ontario Hall of Fame in 2014.
