Track & Field to take over Downtown Calgary June 23

Athletics Alberta and Athletics Canada in partnership with Tourism Calgary, The City of Calgary and the Calgary Downtown Association are pleased to announce that street Track and Field is coming to downtown Calgary Saturday June 23, 2018. The Calgary Track Takeover will bring some of Canada’s biggest Olympic stars to showcase the sport in a fun environment where fans can truly reach out and be part of the action.

“Tourism Calgary is proud to support events that create new experiences for visitors and Calgarians,” said Cindy Ady, CEO Tourism Calgary. “As the first competitive street track and field meet to take place in Western Canada, this unique event will transform a portion of the Calgary’s downtown core in a way that has never been seen before. Hosting the Calgary Track Takeover is a great opportunity for everyone to experience track disciplines in a unique setting.”

Calgary Track Takeover will feature athletes, both men and women, in three of the most thrilling track and field events – the 100-metres sprint, high jump and pole vault – using Athletics Canada’s newly designed portable track, pole vault runway and high jump apron courtesy of Mondo. The event is expected to draw more than 5000 spectators to Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary, and gives fans the opportunity to meet a number of the athletes, obtain autographs pose for photos and even try out the sport for themselves.

“Athletics Canada has been looking for the right partners and communities to stage our first street track events,” said Mathieu Gentès, Athletics Canada Chief Operating Officer. “We’ve found those partners in spades under the leadership of Athletics Alberta and through the support of Tourism Calgary. Together, we will achieve our vision of bringing the #1 Olympic summer sport to the people through a showcase of our very best athletes, and by providing fans a unique try it opportunity in major centers across Canada.”

Athletics Alberta will assemble Canada’s top Olympic level athletesfor this unique, world class event, shining the spotlight on both the City of Calgary and the sport of athletics reaching many new audiences. As such, we have structured the athletes’ prize money to be performance based. This incentive ensures Calgarians will experience some of the world’s top athletes up close and personal at their very best throughout this interactive thrilling experience for all ages, and any level of sport enthusiasm. Participation in the elite fields of Calgary Track Takeover will be on an invite only basis.

The festival environment of this free event will have live music, fun family activities for both kids and parents to try, and a corporate challenge relay race.  Companies wishing to enter the corporate relay race can do so by making a donation to the event, all teams will race in heats for a chance to compete in the final to earn the grand prize. 

Calgary Track Takeover will mark the first competitive street track and field meet in Western Canada and the second competitive street meet to take place in Canada in 2018.  The first of which is scheduled for June 12, at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square in advance of Toronto 2018: Track & Field in the 6ix (Aug. 10-12 at Varsity Stadium).
