By: Jonathan Yue

It was a special two days of competition for Damian Warner, winning his fifth Götzis Hypomeeting title, becoming only the third athlete to win the prestigious event five times. Running the fastest 100-metre time ever in decathlon history with a time of 10.12 seconds, passing the record he previously held of 10.15 seconds, Warner took the lead and never looked back.

Setting another personal best in the shot put (15.34 metres), Warner would also set season’s bests in the long jump (7.67 metres), high jump (2.00 metres), 400-metres (47.38 seconds), 100-metre hurdles (13.64 seconds), pole vault (4.60 metres) and javelin (63.67 metres). At the conclusion of the 10-event competition, Warner earned a total score of 8,711 points, 84 points off his Canadian record of 8,795 points.

In the women’s heptathlon, Georgia Ellenwood and Niki Oudenaarden began the two-day competition with personal bests of their own in the 100-metre hurdles, crossing the finish line with times of 13.58 seconds and 14.07 seconds, respectively. Due to a knee injury, Oudenaarden had to pull out of the competition but will look to comeback stronger.

Ellenwood would continue on, setting season-best marks in the shot put (12.47 metres), 200-metres (24.38 seconds) and javelin (44.14 metres) for a total score of 6,026 points.

It was a busy weekend for Canada’s para-athletes, rewriting numerous Canadian and World records at the Nottwil and Arizona Grand Prix. Marissa Papaconstantinou kicked things off by continuing her record-setting streak, running 13.15 seconds in the T64 100-metre race to pass her previous personal best and Canadian record of 13.35 seconds set in Windsor the previous weekend.

Brent Lakatos went on to set two Canadian records this weekend, including a World record in the T53 400-metre race, with a time of 47.34 seconds, passing the previous record of 47.36 seconds. Lakatos would also finish third in the T53 5000-metre race, with his time of 9:44.8 only 47 milliseconds off the World record and winner of the race, Daniel Romanchuk.

In Arizona, Elizabeth Duff had two Canadian record-breaking performances of her own. Setting the tone on Friday with a huge throw of 12.70 metres in the F40 discus throw, Duff continued her success in the F40 shot put with a throw of 5.50 metres.

In the Nation’s Capital, the 2019 Canadian 10K Championships and Ottawa Marathon took place through the streets of Ottawa. Natasha Wodak and Dylan Wykes braved the rain to capture the Canadian 10K titles, while Reid Coolsaet and Dayna Pidhoresky were the first Canadian’s to cross the finish line in Sunday’s marathon. Coolsaet ran the marathon in a time of 2:17:37, finishing eighth overall. Pidhoresky finished sixth overall in the women’s marathon with a time of 2:37:19. Krista Duchene (2:38:46) and Rachel Hannah (2:41:31) finished right behind Pidhoresky for a 6-7-8 Canadian finish.

Next weekend will feature Diamond League action from Stockholm, where Aaron Brown will look to extend his Diamond League victory streak to two, while Derek Drouin will take on Diamond League competition for the first time since 2017. Joining Drouin in their Diamond League debuts will be Gabriela Stafford Debues-Stafford in the 5000-metre race, while Crystal Emmanuel will compete in the women's 100-metre race.  Many Canadian para-athletes will stay on in Switzerland to compete in the Swiss Nationals and Daniela Jutzeler Memorial.
