Devastated, but not ready to quit.
Madeline (Maddy) Price stood on the track at the 2016 Canadian Track & Field Championships and Olympic Trials in shock, even a little defeated. She crossed the finish line fourth in the 200 metres, one spot shy of securing a place on Canada’s Olympic Team at Rio 2016.
Her biggest fan, her father Shawn Price, was there to pick her up, but little did she know her time with him was limited. Price’s father would die of melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer that spreads to other parts of the body, three and a half months later.
Price required time to return to the track. The loss of her father was simply too much to bear.
Fast forward five years later, and the dream that was “theirs” has now been realized. Price is heading to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as a member of Canada’s 4x400-metre relay team.
Price won the junior national title in the 400 metres in 2014 and then competed at the IAAF World Junior Championships where she helped the 4x400-metre relay team set a national junior record of 3:37.17, though they missed the podium by just 0.15 of a second.
In 2016, she competed at the NACAC U23 Championships where she won bronze with the 4x400-metre relay team and finished fourth in both the 200 metres and 400 metres. In 2018, after finishing second in the 400 metres at the Canadian Track & Field Championships, she raced at the senior NACAC Championships in Toronto finishing sixth in the 400 metres.
Price began 2019 by setting a 400-metre personal best in April, running 51.56 seconds at a meet in Baton Rouge, La. She was part of a fourth-place finish with the 4x400-metre relay at the IAAF World Relays in Yokohama, Japan. She ended the year by competing in her first senior World Athletics Championships, running in the 400 metres, 4x400-metre and 4x400-metre mixed relays.
Price ran collegiately for Duke University, winning bronze at the NCAA Indoor Championships with the 4x400-metre relay team in 2018. She represented Canada at the 2019 FISU Summer Universiade, finishing sixth in the 400 metres and fifth in the 4x400-metre relay.
Born and raised in California’s Bay Area, Price holds dual citizenship as her parents are both Canadian and she calls Toronto her second home.
