Dobson and Chase set Canadian 1500-metres records at IPC Worlds

Doha, Qatar - A pair of Canadians established national records today at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Athletics Championships in the 1500-metres, and fell just short of podium finishes. Tomorrow is the final day of competition at the IPC World Championships.

Shayne Dobson of Moncton, N.B, placed fourth in the final of the men’s T37 1500-metres. His time of 4:32.56 is a new T37 Canadian record, ”It went pretty well. It was a very tactical race for third place. The top two guys took it from the start, so my race strategy was to battle for third place. I think I raced the best I could today in that kind of race. I am satisfied with fourth place."

In the final of the men’s T38 1500-metres, Mitchell Chase of Pickering, Ont., ran a Canadian record time of 4:26.64 to place fifth. "I am really proud of my race. I thought that I ran very well. I am excited because I feel I have a lot more to give in the future,” said the eighteen year-old.

Cody Salomons of Strathroy, Ont., cleared a height of 1.90-metres to claim fourth place in the T44 high jump final.

With third place finish in his section, Kyle Whitehouse of St. Catharines, Ont., automatically qualified for Saturday’s T38 100-metres final.

In the men’s F37 discus throw final, Kevin Strybosch of London, Ont., threw 41.03-metres to place twelfth.

Alister McQueen of Calgary, Alta., finished fourteenth in the F44 javelin final with a best effort of 44.63-metres.

In the first round of the T34 200-metres, Austin Smeenk of Oakville, Ont., placed fifth with a time of 30.74 and Nathan Dewitt of Surrey, B.C., was seventh in his section crossing the line in 32.34. Neither man qualified for the final.
