Two-time national Cross Country champ heads Athletics Canada’s 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Cup team

Ottawa – The home team will be well represented, as Athletics Canada named the 24 athletes representing Canada at the 2020 Pan American Cross Country Cup in the Langford and Victoria, BC area this winter.

With the Pan Am Cross Country Cup at the Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa on February 29, this marks the first time the event has been held in Canada.

After winning her second straight national cross country title in Abbotsford last weekend, Moncton’s Genevieve Lalonde heads the senior women’s team.

“I'm very excited to be representing the Canadian team once again. We had so much fun last year at world championships and I think this is a great opportunity for the team to test their skills on Canadian soil. I know the city of Victoria is very excited to be hosting the event and it is such a lovely place. It will be great to have cross country held there. I will hope for some snow to make it a true Canadian race. I think it's an excellent event to use in preparation for the Olympic season ahead. Steeplechase is like the cross country on the track, so it will be good to test my abilities on the Cross country course,” Lalonde said.

The Pan Am Cross Country Cup is an Association of Pan America Athletics championship, held every second year. It attracts teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean and is a competition between national teams contested in men’s and women’s senior and junior races. The last Pan Am Cross Country Cup was held in 2018 in El Salvador.

“It is always an honour to represent one’s country. However, doing so on home soil is truly a remarkable opportunity. Our athletes get to compete against the best competition in the Americas in a familiar environment, with friends and family there to cheer them on. It is a good test for our athletes to demonstrate performance on demand, right here at home. This is also a unique opportunity to host this important cross-county event here at home,” said Athletics Canada Head Coach Glenroy Gilbert.
