The Canadian 5km Road Race Championship takes place Sunday, September 11, as a part of the Bang & Olufsen YorkvilleRun. The men and women’s fields each feature a number of athletes who represented Canada this summer at the Olympic Games. The talent and depth of the line-up will be sure to make for an exciting and competitive championship.
The men’s race includes 2016 Olympians Lucas Bruchet of Vancouver, B.C., Charles Philibert-Thiboutot of Quebec, Que., and Nathan Brannen of Cambridge, Ont. In Rio Bruchet raced in the first round of the 5000-metres while Philibert-Thiboutot was a semi-finalist and Brannen a finalist in the 1500-metres. The Canadian open (any athlete on Canadian soil) 5km record was set by Wesley Korir of Kenya at this event in 2012. This talented trio has an opportunity to better Korir’s 14:06.
Rio Olympians Andrea Seccafien of Guelph, Ont., and Jessica O’Connell of Calgary, Alta., headline a formidable women’s championship race. They will face a stiff challenge from 2015 Pan American Games medallists Sasha Gollish and Rachel Hannah, both of Toronto, Ont. The Canadian open 5km record of 15:48 was set in 2012 by Malindi Elmore.
