The 2017 World Para Athletics Championships begin Friday. Competition takes place in London, England from July 14 to 23. A total of 23 athletes will represent Canada at the championships on the track, and in the field.

Medal hopes are led by Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que., who looks to add to his collection of 12 World Para Athletics Championships medals. The team also includes Rio medallists Alexandre Dupont (wheelchair 4x400-metres), Alister McQueen (F44 javelin throw), Tristan Smyth (wheelchair 4x400-metres), Liam Stanley (T37 1500-metres) and Curtis Thom (wheelchair 4x400-metres). Guillaume Ouellet of Victoriaville, Que., enters the World Championships as the reigning champion in the T13 visually impaired 5000-metres.

Friday Preview

The first day of competition features Curtis Thom of Mississauga, Ont., and Isaiah Christophe of Brampton, Ont., in the men’s T54 100-metres. Thom has the 21st fastest performance of 2017 in the event. Thom and Christophe will be looking to earn a spot in Friday’s final.

In the men’s T37/38 category, Shayne Dobson of Moncton, N.B., Liam Stanley of Victoria, B.C., and Mitchell Chase of Pickering, Ont. will line up in the heats of the 800-metres. Stanely’s 2:03.11 is the third fastest time in the world this year coming into this round of qualification.
