Canada Day to Feature the First Virtual Canadian 10km Championships

This Canada Day, Canada’s elite 10 km runners are going to celebrate Canada Day the best way they know how, racing in the first ever Virtual Canadian 10 km Championships, on July 1, 2020. This unique event is presented by Run Ottawa and Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

The original date of the Canadian 10 km Championships was May 23, 2020 to be held as part of Run Ottawa’s Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

“Our goal is to offer a fun and competitive racing environment for Canada’s best 10 km runners during a time when no real races exist,” said Dylan Wykes, Olympian and Elite Athlete Coordinator for Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

Race Details

Eligibility will follow the same time qualification standards as the real world 10 km championships, outlined on the Run Ottawa website.

Runners will have a 6-hour window to complete their run, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT, to complete a course of their own choosing. The runner’s route must consist of an out-and-back course.

For the official time, only elapsed times will be considered, not lap times, which must be recorded on a GPS device that will generate a GPX file. In addition, the racer must have an accompanying person on a bike/or other vehicle that also tracks GPS and records a minimum of 5 minutes of video throughout the run. Runners have a 90-minute window from the completion of their run to upload the GPX data to Sportstats.

The top 5 female and male runners will receive the following prize money, with a matching donation made to the charity of their choice for the Scotiabank Charity Challenge:

  • 1st place - $500
  • 2nd place - $400
  • 3rd place - $300
  • 4th place - $200
  • 5th place - $100

Full details on the event are available on Run Ottawa’s website. Elite 10 km runners can register now.
