ICYMI: The Mountain Top

We crowned national champions who spent the weekend racing through mountain trails for 50km or 50 miles. They’ve earned their moments in the sun.

The world crowned a Canadian hammer thrower, too, at a little thing called the World Athletics Championships.

You couldn’t stream them both at the same time, so we’re here to get you caught up on all the weekend action and set you up for another big week in Budapest.

National 50km and 50 Mile Mountain and Trail Champs are Squamish Superstars

The road  to any national championship is going to be tough, but spare a thought for the field competing at this weekend’s Canadian Mountain and Trail Running Championships in the 50km and 50 mile distances.

Between the distance, the elevation, the challenging course and the elements, these newly-crowned champions put on a super-human – and record-breaking – display of strength, speed and endurance, as part of the Squamish 50.

Brandon Gardiner took the men’s 50km title in a new course record time of 4:45:14. On the women’s side, Robyn Mildren claimed her national championship with a time of 5:30:28.

Historic Gold Medal Highlights Opening Weekend in Budapest

The first two days of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest were anything but boring for fans of Team Canada.

Personal bests and national records were smashed time and time again. But the big story Ethan Katzberg’s gold medal in the men’s hammer throw. Why is that such a big deal?

Katzberg becomes the first Canadian to win a world championship in the hammer throw, and the first Canadian man to even medal in the event. His championship throw of 81.25 metres is a new Canadian record and more than two and a half metres further than his Canadian championships throw last month.

But that golden throw wasn’t the only thing that happened this weekend. Get all the updates from the first two days of action:

Day 1: Breaking Records in Budapest

Day 2: A Golden Night for Katzberg

We have another exciting week of track and filed action ahead of us!
