Santiago 2023 Recap: Team Canada Starts the Last Weekend of the Pan Am Games

Kate Current hung in with a savvy group of racers in the women’s 1500 metre final. Her time of 4:16.65 was good for 7th place.

“It wasn’t my best and it wasn’t my worst. I was coming into it hoping to medal and I was quite a bit off of that,” Current said. “I made a few tactical mistakes. Every one is a learning experience and I’m really glad I got this experience.”

Eight Hundred Metres to Go in the Semis

Addy Townsend got the day going for Team Canada in the women’s 800 metre semi-final. Townsend finished 2nd in her semi and qualified for this weekend’s final with a time of 2:06.62.

“I stayed super patient. I didn’t get myself into the best spot, but I just trusted that with 200 metres to go, I still felt good,” Townsend said. “The crowd was insane! It’s amazing. You hear the roar and there’s no giving up now.

In the men’s 800 metres, Stephen Evans was 4th in his heat with a time of 1:48.98. Fellow Canadian 800 metre runner Zakary Mama-Yari was 4th in his own heat, with a time of 1:49.71. Neither man qualified for the men’s final.

“I was mentally and physically ready. I got out the way I wanted to. It was a very slow first lap,” Evans said. “It was my first time racing this many quality athletes. There’s a reason they’ve won medals and have been at Worlds and Olympics. But it doesn’t mean I won’t be there one day.

“It felt great. I think I had more in the tank, but I should have taken more risks,” Mama-Yari said. “This is my first national team, my first major Games, so it’s a learning experience and I’m really happy about it.
