ICYMI: Indoor Season Begins at Home and Away

The Knights of Columbus Saskatchewan Indoor Games got the National Track & Field Tour started in Prairie style.

Canadian athletes were dropping PBs at meet all over the world.

This is the last week to apply for our Athletics For All grants.

It’s the first weekend recap of 2024 and we hear there are some big events coming this year. You’re going to want all this information when the spotlight shines in Paris this summer, so dig into some early-season results!

National Track & Field Tour Starts in Saskatoon

It has been said time and time again. You want to get off to a good start. You want to be fast off the line, you want to set the tone with a strong first throw or jump, you want to build momentum from the get-go.

The 2024 National Track & Field Tour got exactly  that kind of fast start at the 2024 Knights of Columbus Saskatchewan Indoor Games.

Canada’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid banked a pair of first place finishes in the 60 m race (7.41 seconds) and the 60 m hurdles (8.14 seconds).

Nigerian Olympian (and Saskatchewan resident) Usheoritse Itsekiri won both the men’s 50-metre and 60-metre races – replicating the double he achieved at this event in 2023.

Speaking of fast starts, a handful of Canadians set new personal bests at track meets around the States this weekend.

Evan Dunfee set a new Canadian and North American record in the 10,000-metre event, stopping the clock and breaking the tape in a time of 38:25.42 at the Supernova: World Athletics Race Walking Tour in Australia.

Marco Arop clocked a new personal best and Canadian record in winning style, taking the men's 800 metres at the Razorback Invitational in Arizona, with a time of 1:45.51 indoors. His fast time shaved four-tenths of a second off his own Canadian record.

Ben Flanagan set a new 5,000 metres PB with a time of 13:04.62 indoors at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston.

Charles Philibert-Thiboutot set a new PB in the mile in Boston, finishing second and setting a new Quebec record with his time of 3:53.41.

Golden Throw for Mitton

Sarah Mitton set a meet record at the Meeting de l'Eure in France this weekend. She claimed gold in the women’s shot put event with her record-breaking throw of 19.58 metres.

Athletics for All Applications Due February 4

Athletics Canada announced a new $350,000 grant program in December, designed to remove barriers and increase sport participation for two targeted populations: newcomers to Canada and athletes with a disability. The Athletics For All grant program is made possible by the Government of Canada’s Community Sport for All Initiative which also includes a national marketing campaign and coast-to-coast-to-coast local community activations.

Grant applications are now open for the Athletics For All program, which will focus on engaging these communities to participate in one of the world’s most accessible sports. Applications will close Sunday, February 4, 2024.
