The first world champions of this Olympic year will be revealed in Scotland next month and Athletics Canada today announced the athletes competing for the crown at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, as well as athletes who have been provisionally selected.
Meet Team Canada
“This team is a mix of some younger athletes with some veterans. I think that bodes well,” said had coach Glenroy Gilbert. “It's a very small team, but I think it will be a strong team. Sarah Mitton was the silver medalist last summer in Budapest. She'll lead the squad with Alysha Newman, who won the Tour in pole vault last year.”
“World Indoor Championships is a fun test to see where we’re at with the training and al the work we’ve put in,” said Mitton. “With it being an Olympic year, my focus is set towards the Games, but it’s great to be able to be competitive and get into that competitive mindset this early in the season at an event like the World Indoor Championships.”
Those provisionally selected athletes met the Athletics Canada indoor qualification standard in their respective events. They will be added to the team if they appear as “Qualified by Entry Standard” or “In World Rankings quota” on the World Athletics rankings list and quota places remain open in their event.
“We look for positive results and a positive experience for all the athletes that are there,” Gilbert said. “It’s an opportunity for the athletes to compete at a high level at a World Indoor Championships. I think we can have some good results, with these Athletes performing at a high level in Glasgow.”
Belgrade 2022’s Golden Moment
Glasgow 2024 is the first World Athletics Indoor Championships since the 2022 event in Belgrade, Serbia. The 2023 Indoors were slated to take place in Nanjing, China, but the meet was postponed due to ongoing pandemic conditions in China at the time.
At Belgrade 2022, Team Canada came home with one gold medal, three new national records, seven personal bests, and eight top-eight performances.
The gold medal came from defending Olympic decathlon champion Damian Warner, only months after his history-making turn in Tokyo. It was Warner’s first World Indoor gold medal, having also won silver at the 2018 championship in Birmingham.
Glasgow 2024 Promises Greatness
There will be six sessions of action-packed sport over three days of intense competition in the intimate setting of the arena in Glasgow, with many of the best athletes in the world competing for prestigious World Indoor titles.
Over 700 competitors from more than 130 countries are expected to take part, competing in 26 events - 13 for men and 13 for women.
