ICYMI: Smashing Success

Canadian para athletes re-wrote the record book at meets all over the States.

Sarah Mitton struck silver at the latest stop on the Diamond League circuit.

Andre De Grasse got his 200 metres going on the East Coast.

The Athletics Canada Road Race Label landed in the muggy GTA for the Mississauga Half Marathon.

Does this seem like too much news for a Monday. Yeah … we didn’t think so, either. Dive into some of the highlights of a busy weekend of sport!

Para Records Fall

You can’t write the Canadian record book in permanent ink, because three Canadian para athletes threw, ran and jumped to new national marks this weekend.

Charlotte Bolton’s throw of 30.37 metres in the women’s F41 discus throw is a new Canadian and Americas record. The 2021 Paralympian set this new benchmark at a meet in Oklahoma.

Bianca Borgella made some history of her own at the LSU Invitational, in Louisiana. Her time of 12.02 seconds was good for a new Canadian record in the women’s T13 100 metres.

Rounding out a trio of new national records, Jesse Zesseu lept to a new men’s F37 long jump record, when he travelled 5.82 metres in the air at a meet in California.

Mitton Throws Her Way to Shanghai Podium

Competing in her second Diamond League meet in a week, Sarah Mitton earned the silver medal with a best throw of 19.86 metres. Launching that silver-medal shot in the first round to take an early lead, Mitton followed ended up with fourth throws over 19 metres on the day.

Regan Yee also bettered her 3,000 metre steeplechase time in Shanghai, compared to last week’s race in Xiamen. Her 9th place time of 9:26.12 was more than five seconds faster this weekend.

De Grasse Gets Out Fast

Andre De Grasse put down his fastest season-opening 200 metre time ever on Friday, clocking in with a time of 20.11 seconds – fastest among 15 heats of competitors at the East Coast Relays.

He followed that up with the fastest time in the men’s 100 metres on Saturday, crossing the line with a time of 10.11 seconds.

Half Marathon Takes Over Mississauga

Matthew Viveiros was first across the line in the 2024 Mississauga Half Marathon, the latest stop in the Athletics Canada Road Race Label. His time of 1:07:36 edged out Gizachew Negasa (1:08:16) and Aaron Manning (1:08:40).

On the women’s side, Allie Sandluck took the win with her time of 1:20:21. Rounding out the podium were Philes Ongori (1:22:09) and Catherine Thompson (1:24:11).

You won’t have to wait long for more Road Race Label action, as both the Vancouver Marathon and Half Marathon take place on the west coast this coming weekend.
