Pam LeJean, Brent Lakatos each earn silver on Day 6 of IPC Worlds

Doha, Qatar - Canada added two silver medals on day six of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships courtesy of strong performances from Pamela LeJean of Halifax, N.S., and Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que.

After a bronze medal finish two years ago in Lyon, France, Pamela LeJean moved up a spot to claim silver in the women’s T53 shot put final. The Canadian thrower was only 2-centimetres out of the top spot on the podium.

”I am happy with the result but I feel I have more work to do to be ready. I need to get stronger. I will rest for two weeks and start training again with that goal in mind,” explained LeJean

After already winning two gold medals at these championships, Brent Lakatos was bumped to silver in the men’s T53 400-metres by a mere thirteen hundredth of a second. Ever gracious in defeat, Lakotos said after the race, ”The race was very good. Obviously, second is not what I came here for. It was a good time. I was close to a personal best. He (the Chinese athlete) did get a personal best and he won by a really small margin. Congratulations to him."

Becky Richter of Saskatoon, Sask., placed fourth in the women’s F51 discus final. ”It was ok. Definitely it wasn't what I was throwing earlier this year. Some medical stuff restrained me, but you have to roll with the punches and deal with it,” said Richter.

Jean-Philippe Maranda of Ste-Aurélie, Que., finished 12th in the first round of the T53 400-metres and did not earn a spot in the final.

In the first round of the men’s T54 400-metres Alexandre Dupont, Clarenceville, Que., finished 12th with a time of 49.42, he did not go through to the final.

In round one of the men’s T34 100-metres Nathan Dewitt of Surrey, B.C., placed fifth in his section while teammate Austin Smeenk of Oakville, Ont., crossed the line for seventh in his heat. Neither advanced.

Richard Carr of Port Elgin, Ont., fouled three times in the men’s T11 long jump final.
