Training and Certification
Coach training courses are organized according to the long-term development stage of the athlete, which is related to their age and experience in the sport. Read below to find out which course is for you.
LTAD Stage: U12
NCCP Context: Community Sport
This course provides RJTW leaders with the skills and tools they need to lead sessions ranging from 1-day fun days to day camp programs to once- or twice-a-week programs offered over a few months, in a club or in school. It introduces track and field through fundamental movement skills with games to reinforce those skills.
Course Length: 8 hours

LTAD Stage: U16 - U18, & Adult Recreation
NCCP Context: Instruction-Beginner and Competition-Introduction
The Foundations of Coaching Course consists of 5 eLearning modules and two online sessions consisting of the theory modules that are required for NCCP Sport Coach and Club Coach. Once coaches complete these modules, they can take the practical portions.
Prerequisites:
- Becoming Para Ready in Athletics (coming soon)
Recommended :
The Foundations online modules must be completed before the Sport or Club Coach sessions
(Length: 6h – can be over multiple evening sessions or on a weekend)

LTAD Stage: U16
NCCP Context: Instruction-Beginner
An introduction to Track & Field that teaches the basic skills of all events as well as how to plan a practice and a month of training. It is ideal for the generalist coach that may be coaching introductory-intermediate level athletes in a multiple event context; often in a school or club, or at a junior high-high school level.
The Foundations online modules must be completed before the Sport Coach sessions

LTAD Stage: U18, & Adult Recreation
NCCP Context: Competition-Introduction
This is an event specific course that teaches a more in-depth technical analysis for one event group and how to plan a season. Coaches can sign up for either sprints, endurance, jumps, throws (including para- throws) or wheelchair racing.
The Foundations online modules must be completed before the Club Coach sessions
Length: 1.5 days

LTAD Stage: U20, University and Senior level athletes)
NCCP Context: Competition-Development
Performance Coach is an event specific course ideal for coaches with U20 athletes or older, specializing in one event group, training all-year round, and competing in national competitions.
Coaches can sign up for one event group: sprints, endurance, throws, jumps, or wheelchair racing.
Prerequisites:
- Coaches must be Club Coach Certified and be coaching an athlete at U20 or higher who is competing at a National Championship. Exceptions may apply.
- Eligibility will be determined by completing an intake form. Coaches will also need to complete pre course online learning. This can be completed at any time prior to the course start date.

LTAD Stage: International level athletes
NCCP Context: Competition-High Performance
Prerequisites:
- Coaches must be Performance Coach Certified and be coaching an athlete who has achieved CAPP International consideration standard.
Length: 2-3 years

- World Athletics Academy (Program is currently under revision)
NCCP Online Evaluations Required for Certification
- Making Ethical Decisions (all)
- Leading Drug Free Sport (Performance Coach)
- Managing Conflict (Performance Coach)
How to sign up for an evaluation
Coaches can request to go directly to evaluation (i.e. do a certification without completing the training) in exceptional circumstances, but the onus is on the coach to prove why they do not need further training.
The minimum time between Club Coach and Performance Coach certifications should be about 1 year, so that the coach can grow and apply what they’ve learned from one context before embarking on the next.
